Students have moved and are moving. Many have rented 1-and 2-bedroom apartments in Roanoke, VA for the very first time. Here is some advice for those who are new to apartment living.
Here's what you should and should not, do ...
DO: Get your rent in on time. It's important to seem like a responsible adult. Even if you're sort of not.
DON'T: Buy too much at the supermarket if you don't have a car. You didn't think about how you were going to get 24 Gatorades back to the apartment, did you?
DO: Have five go-to meals. The art of cooking is keeping it simple. You want to have a few staple meals to cook for dinner. Perfect for you and a few of your friends.
DON'T: Buy an absurd amount of cold cuts in one trip. Planning out your meals is important, but this isn't the dining hall anymore. Fresh food doesn't magically appear, ready to eat. Food goes bad. Food you bought with the money you're not making. Be smart.
DO: Buy hand towels for the bathroom.
DON'T: Be the guy who always buys the paper towels for the apartment. (Or the trash bags, laundry detergent or Bud Lite 30-packs.) Show a little backbone.
DO: Binge on Netflix while you eat. You have to get your daily fix in and you need to eat to survive.
DON'T: Overdo it. One minute you're watching you're favorite scene from a favorite TV show, the next minute you've re-watched the entire first season. Including deleted scenes.
DO: Ask who's there when the buzzer rings. It's probably the Domino's delivery guy, but just make sure.
DON'T: Order too much from the Domino's delivery guy. If you're on a first name basis with the man, you know something's wrong.
