Festival Weekend in Roanoke

- Friday, May 03, 2013

If you live in an apartment in Roanoke, VA you know this is a busy weekend for festivals in our city. Every spring and summer the Roanoke area comes alive with plenty of festivals and events for the entire family.

Just this weekend alone, there's the Strawberry Festival in Elwood Park, The Cinco De Mayo Celebration and the Chili Cook-Off which are all happening in downtown Roanoke.

The Annual Strawberry Festival is one of the Valley's most popular and well-known events held the first weekend in May for two days in Elwood Park.

The Virginia State Chili Cook-Off is a family affair with activities for all ages held on Market Street on May 4th.

The Cinco de Mayo Celebration is Roanoke's newest festival held on May 4th. For Cinco de Mayo head to Downtown Roanoke for music, games, food and drink all with a Mexican theme!

It's not only fun for residents and visitors, it's good for business.

Many who live here in Roanoke or frequent the Star City know it's all about the festivals when Spring and Summer roll around.

Downtown Roanoke is a nice place to be.  Festivals are fun here because the city is laid back, family oriented, with bars and restaurants, and plenty of things to do.

One of those restaurants is The Roanoke Weiner Stand.  You can get a famous chili topped hot dog here most any day. For them, business booms when the area is filled with weekend events.

The Chili Cook-Off, is one of their busiest times, so get in line early.

Festivals like the Chili Cook-Off and Strawberry Festival help bring in a 20% boost in area business sales. But more than that, these events bring a sense of lasting community.

As you can imagine, with tens of thousands of people expected in the downtown and surrounding areas, you'll have to pack your patience, especially if you're driving.

All of the parking lots in and around the city are free except The Tower, Market and Center in The Square lots. If you are driving, expect lots of street closures and very little street parking. You may want to consider walking, carpooling or taking public transportation to any of this weekend's events.
