For many, renting an apartment in Roanoke, VA is a better alternative to owning a home.

But today, renters in general and you people specifically, are more informed about the world and its depleting resources, more renters are trying to make their rented home more eco-friendly.

The good news is that you can have a green home without invalidating your lease. Use the following easy tips and ideas to make your home more green today:

Picking the Apartment

  • Before signing a lease, check to see if the building is eco-friendly or meets LEED standards.
  • Do not be afraid to talk to landlords about the economic benefits of incorporating green living into their apartments.
  • Choose a home that is within walking distance from your job or school so that you do not have to take a car or other pollution-forming forms of transportation.
  • Look for an apartment that has an on-site recycling program.
  • Choose a home that has the perfect amount of space you need. Smaller homes use less energy.

Around the House

  • Invest in energy-efficient blackout curtains to keep the heat inside your home during the winter and to ultimately save on your heating bill.
  • Seal all gaps around windows and light fixtures with caulk or putty.
  • Winterize older windows by shrink-wrapping them.
  • Replace all light bulbs with energy-efficient light bulbs.
  • Clean your refrigerator on a regular basis to keep it dust-free and working to its fullest potential.
  • Look for paper products such as napkins, paper towels and toilet paper that are made from recycled paper.
  • Buy cleaning products and personal care products that are made from sustainable, less-toxic ingredients.
  • Buy more plants. Not only do plants beautify your home, but they also naturally improve the air quality and can help keep your home cool in the hot summer months.
  • Unplug appliances when they are not in use.
