Virginia: The East Coasts' Best State

Virginia: The East Coasts' Best State

Joseph Coupal - Friday, May 04, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAVirginia - what a place to live. Growing up here is one of the greatest gifts. Simply because you get the best of both worlds. Between mountains, beaches, countrysides, cities, and an obvious change in each season, Virginia proves to be the best state on the East Coast.

1. Mountains

Especially mountains in the fall. Whether you grew up hiking them all the time, or if you have never hiked a day in your life, you can always brag about having the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in your homeland.

2. Virginia Beach.

We live on the coast. Day trip to the beach? Not a problem. Pack up your car and get going with suntan oil and beach chairs.

3. Countryside

There are plenty of windy back roads to roll windows down and drive. Cows. Horses. Goats. Dogs. You'll pass them all.

4. Cities

Virginia Beach. Richmond. Norfolk. Roanoke. Lynchburg. Charlottesville. And like all Virginians, we claim D.C. as one of our own, too.

5. The weather

In the spring, there are beautiful flowers and rain. Being in a college town, the summers are laid back and feel like home. The students are gone, and it gives the rest of the residents a chance to sit around the pool and enjoy the sun. In the fall, the leaves change and temperatures start to drop. There is football and apple picking, along with lots of flannel. In the winter is when people question whether or not Virginia is a northern or southern state. It all just depends on the year. The winters will no doubt get cold, but the snowfall depends on the year. Some years get several feet, and some years get short of an inch. Whatever the amount, this is a state that can, and does get snow.

No other state is able to brag about the same mountains, beaches, countrysides, cities, or weather like this one. Who cares if no one knows whether Virginia is a northern or southern state, it's the best state regardless.

Virginia Ranks 9 in Top Ten Best States 2018

Virginia Ranks 9 in Top Ten Best States 2018

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, April 12, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAMost Americans do not choose where they grow up and often end up living in the same place as adults, either for financial reasons or because of social and familial connections. Still, many Americans choose to pack up and move to a new state — usually in search of better life.

People who contemplate such a move would certainly consider a state’s overall quality of life. While every person is different and may weigh certain factors more than others, quality of life generally consists of a multitude of factors, including an area’s economy, jobs market, income levels, poverty, crime, education levels, health care, transportation, and whether the area is generally desirable.

Based on these factors and others, 24/7 Wall St. ranked all 50 states for overall quality of life.

9. Virginia

  • 10-yr. population change: +10.1% (21st largest increase)
  • Annual unemployment: 4.0% (tied — 14th lowest)
  • Poverty rate: 11.0% (tied — 12th lowest)
  • Life expectancy at birth: 79.1 years (25th shortest)

Problems with crime tend to be local rather than statewide, but across Virginia crime tends to be low and the state is relatively crime free compared to most of the country. There were just 217 violent crimes reported in the state for every 100,000 residents, nearly half the national figure of 397 incidents per 100,000 people.

Virginians are also among the most likely to have a college degree, which often results in higher incomes and better quality of life across a population. Just over 38% of Virginia adults have a bachelor’s degree, compared to 31.3% of adults nationwide. This high educational attainment rate may help explain Virginia’s relatively low unemployment rate. Last year, average unemployment was 4.0%, well below the national average rate of 4.9%.

Apartment Hunting Tips for College Students

Apartment Hunting Tips for College Students

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, April 05, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAIt could be freshman year, sophomore year or even the upperclassman years but there comes a time when the stress of finding an apartment will begin. The key to success in college apartment shopping is to start looking and gathering information sooner rather than later. Apartment landlords like to start easing early.

Apartment complexes will start sending you mail on campus a few months prior to lease signing. Make sure you read and save each and every one of those pamphlets. Apartments tend to fill up quickly in college towns so it is always a smart idea to have a handful of apartment options for yourself and your roommates.

Once you start gathering information it’s important to have open communication with your parents. It’s important to ask for their advice on pricing and what to look for in an apartment. The price of apartments near colleges can be over-priced because they know they are in high demand.

Most students feel it is convenient to live in apartments on campus. Sometimes you can find good deals and clean apartments near campus, but if there are only a few available and you have a car or bus service available, off campus apartments could be a good choice. Apartments off campus tend to be nicer and sometimes cheaper. However, the best way to know this for sure is not by just researching online and reading pamphlets. Another key to successful apartment hunting is booking a showing with the apartment office to see exactly where you would be living.

Some apartment leasing agencies try to get students to sign leases without physically showing the tenants the apartment they will be living in. Be sure to view the apartment in person. Securing an appointment will also give you a look into how friendly the staff is and how the property owner treats their prospective renters.

An apartment says a lot about a person and it’s critical to have a reasonably priced and clean apartment where you will feel comfortable. If you follow this advice, you should be in good shape. Happy hunting!

Roanoke, VA for a Great Retirement

Roanoke, VA for a Great Retirement

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, March 29, 2018
  • When deciding the best place to retire, it's important to consider affordability, quality of life, and health care.
  • Minnesota is the best for quality of life and healthcare, but has low affordability for retirees.
  • Florida is the best state for retirees, not surprising considering it has the most senior citizens.
Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAThe US is very large and experiences can vary drastically within the country.

If you decide to stay in America when you are done working, you might want to know which state is best for retirement. WalletHub recently released their 2018 retirement rankings. Using 41 metrics in three broad categories, they were able to rank every state to find the best and worst places to retire.

The three main categories used were affordability, quality of life, and health care. WalletHub weighted the affordability section 40% and the other two areas were given equal weight of 30%.

Where you decide to live during retirement depends on what you value. Residents of Hawaii have the highest life expectancy, while the lowest is found in Mississippi. On the other hand, the cost of living is totally flipped with Mississippi coming in first and Hawaii ranked last.

If you are looking to be entertained in retirement, New York might be a good option. Despite the state's lackluster overall rating for retirement, WalletHub's analysis found that the Empire State has the most museums and theaters per capita.

The same state — Minnesota — can claim to have the best quality of life and health care. However, a low score on the affordability measure kept Minnesota from being one of the best overall states for retirement.

As for each of the three categories: affordability, quality of life, and health care, where did Virginia rank?

5. Virginia

  • Affordability rank: 18
  • Quality of life rank: 9
  • Health care rank: 21

Renting is a Good Idea for Many People

Renting is a Good Idea for Many People

Joseph Coupal - Friday, March 23, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VASo many Americans today think they should own a home. But there is that argument that disagrees. While home ownership provides security, it almost certainly doesn't give you the returns provided by equities. Using history as a guide, you can reasonably expect roughly 8% annual gains on your stock portfolio over the long term. House prices, on the other hand, tend to follow the rate of inflation.

Finally, don't forget that you will also be incurring out-of-pocket costs that you wouldn't encounter when you are renting an apartment in Roanoke, VA. From the cost of ripping down wallpaper to repairing a leaky roof, even gas for the lawn mower, home maintenance can be costly and time consuming. Before you think about buying, estimate how much the costs will be. Don’t put yourself in the position that you are living hand-to-mouth even if it is in your own home.

Draining Your 401(k) for a down payment

Even though it is an option, withdrawing money from your 401(k) to fund a home purchase is a bad idea. Assuming you're not at least 59 1/2 years old, you'll owe taxes plus a 10% penalty. You will also cripple your retirement savings, since most plans won't allow you to contribute to your plan for at least a year following a withdrawal. This means you're going to lose out on your company match as well as future tax-deferred contributions, not to mention the earnings on the money you've withdrawn.

Borrowing from a 401(k) isn't much better. If you leave the company for any reason, you run the risk that your loan will be called immediately. While out of your account, those dollars will also miss out on any market gains, and that tax-deferred growth.

Excerpts from Smart Money

Roanoke, VA: Where Your Salary Goes Farthest

Roanoke, VA: Where Your Salary Goes Farthest

Joseph Coupal - Friday, March 16, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes - VAYou see, these are the places in Virginia where the cost of living is the lowest; where your salary goes the furthest. And when you have the luxury of choosing where to live in the Old Dominion, then the cost of living should play a role in the decision.

So we did the work for you and crunched the numbers to find the cities that have lower food, energy, and housing costs. After the dust settled on our analysis of the cities in Virginia, we were left with this set of the best value for your money.

#2. Roanoke, VA

There are basic necessities that you have to buy no matter where in the country you live. Those things include:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Gas
  • Health Insurance
  • Utilities
  • Transportation

You can then compare the cost of these things in each of the places in Virginia to figure out which is the least expensive.

What you are left with is a ‘Cost of Living Index’ that normalizes to 100 for an average place in the United States.

So we used that cost of living index in order to rank all of the 59 places in Virginia that have more than 5,000 people.

And just so you can better understand how the cost of living index works, 100 is the average cost of a place in the United States. A score of 90 means that the place cost 10% less than average. In other words, a score of 90 means it’s 10% less expensive.

Roanoke, VA

  • Population: 96,742
  • Services: 90
  • Groceries: 90
  • Health Care: 96
  • Housing: 75
  • Transportation: 88
  • Utilities: 100

Roanoke is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,032. It is located in the Roanoke Valley of the Roanoke Region of Virginia. For more information on apartments in Roanoke, VA contact Honeywood.

Virginia: A Great and Affordable Place to Retire

Virginia: A Great and Affordable Place to Retire

Joseph Coupal - Friday, March 09, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAEach year, countless workers rack their brains trying to determine whether the time is right to bring their careers to a close.

But while deciding what age to retire is certainly important, it's just as crucial to figure out where to retire. After all, once you stop working, you'll move over to a fixed income, at which point you'll need to put more thought into how much you're spending each month. Furthermore, since you'll have a lot of time on your hands in the absence of a full-time job, you'll probably want to live someplace that offers a decent array of local amenities and entertainment.

With all of that in mind, WalletHub recently compiled a list of the best and worst states for retirees this year. The data is the result of various factors, including cost of living, amenities and attractions, and senior health services -- and it might actually help you land on the best state for your golden years.

#5 Virginia

Of course, the list speaks to the 50 states' overall rank, but as a near-retiree, you may be inclined to base your decision heavily on cost of living.

In cost of living, Virginia ranks #18!

USA Today

Roanoke, VA is One of the Most Affordable Cities to Live

Roanoke, VA is One of the Most Affordable Cities to Live

Joseph Coupal - Friday, March 02, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAThe Commonwealth of Virginia is nicknamed the "Mother of Presidents" as eight U.S. presidents have been born there, more than any other state. And though the state may be relatively small—it’s the thirty-fifth largest and twelfth most populous—it features five distinct geographic regions, giving the state broad appeal across a wide range of demographics. In other words, whether you want to live in a big city or rural area, or prefer the beach or the mountains, there’s something for everyone in Virginia.

The cities that made the list of most afordable cities in this state are not necessarily the cheapest cities in Virginia, but are carefully chosen based upon budget-friendly and quality-of-life data points, in order to offer residents the best possible combination of livability and affordability.

5. Roanoke

Nicknamed “The Star City of the South,” Roanoke has developed a reputation as a great place to live among both young and old alike. There are more than 20 colleges and universities within a 60-mile radius of the city, and countless graduates choose to settle here, which explains why the largest segment of the population is between 25 and 29 years old. The well-educated workforce makes the city an attractive place to do business, and unemployment has remained well below the national average for at least five years running.

But affordable housing is arguably the biggest drawing card. Combine that with a temperate climate (the average annual temperature is 57 degrees) and a plethora of things to do (especially if you’re a lover of the great outdoors), and it’s no wonder that Livability recently named Roanoke one of the 10 best places to retire too.

So Many Reasons to Move to Virginia

So Many Reasons to Move to Virginia

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, March 01, 2018

Honeywood Apartment Homes in Roanoke VAWith wide open spaces and big city living, the Commonwealth offers plenty of reasons to make a move.

The home of more presidents than any other state, Virginia’s history is long and rich – and residents are continuing to grow the state by attracting top jobs and high-quality education while celebrating the past. Whether you’re looking for metropolitan excitement or country leisure, Virginia is a top place to live. Here are eight reasons to consider relocating.

City Living, Country Relaxing

No matter where you live in Virginia, you can have the best of both worlds. Major cities such as Richmond, Virginia Beach and Charlottesville offer thriving art scenes, public transportation, diverse culinary offerings and other city amenities. Right outside city limits, you can find the Atlantic Ocean, the Appalachian Mountains or even just wide open country.

Blast to the Past

As one of the original 13 colonies, Virginia’s history is long and rich. Odes to the past can be found all over the state with George Washington’s home Mount Vernon, the Arlington National Cemetery and Historic Williamsburg – just to name a few. Want even more history? Northern Virginia borders Washington D.C., so there’s even more ways to get in touch with America’s roots.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

Looking for new job opportunities? Virginia’s job growth lends itself the ideal environment for starting or switching your career easily, with unemployment below the national average at 3.8 percent. Leading job sectors in the state include farming, military, service and business. In fact, Northern Virginia is home to six of the 20 highest income counties in the United States.

Quality Health Care

A top hospital is never far away in Virginia, with 89 hospitals throughout the state. Inova Fairfax Hospital is the largest hospital in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, and the University of Virginia Medical Center is highly ranked in endocrinology. Virginia also has a ratio of 127 primary care physicians per 10,000 residents, which is the 16th highest ratio nationally.

Earn a Degree

Virginia’s school system consistently ranks in the top 10 on the National Assessment of Educational Progress for school quality and student performance. In fact, Virginia has a high school graduation rate of 85 percent. And after high school, students have 176 colleges and universities in the state to choose from – many of which are nationally ranked.

Discover Things to Do in Virginia

The Old Dominion is also rich in arts and culture, with publicly funded museums across the state, as well as theaters found in cities and suburbs. The Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna is the only national park designed for us as a performing arts center. The Virginia Opera and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra lead the state’s fine arts, and with Washington D.C. to the north, the Smithsonian museum system is also in reach.

Family-Friendly Fun

Looking for family fun? Head to one of the state’s seasonal festivals for some quirky fun and to explore your new home. At the end of July, don’t miss the annual Pony Swim & Auction, where wild Chincoteague ponies take a swim in the bay. In September, Bay Days celebrates Chesapeake Bay’s 400 year history, featuring live music and historical events, or there’s the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in May that hosts parades and bluegrass concerts.

Happy Neighbors

Virginia cities are often ranked as some of the happiest in the country, with Charlottesville most recently named the happiest city in America by the US National Bureau of Economic Research. And with high job prospects, nationally ranked schools and plenty to do across the state, how could Virginians not be happy?
